ai · Suno

You’re creating on Suno, which means…

Whatever ownership you get is a subscription feature — and Suno will not promise there is any copyright there to get. The licence you hand them is permanent whether you subscribe or not.

Suno gives you a different contract depending on where you are. This page reads all 2; every clause below says which one it comes from.

What they own

No clause says Suno owns your songs. It also never says you do, unless you pay: the one clause that moves anything in your direction assigns you “any Output owned by Suno”, and only on the Pro or Premier tier. What that qualifier concedes, the document never spells out. On the free or Basic tier nothing is assigned to anyone.

What you own

The copyright in what you upload — the licence paragraph opens by making you warrant it, that you “own all right, title and interest in and to Submissions, including all copyrights and rights of publicity contained therein”. And if you pay, whatever right Suno holds in the tracks you generate while the subscription is running. Suno is careful not to promise that amounts to much: it makes “no representation or warranty to you that any copyright will vest in any Output.” You may own a thing the law does not recognise as ownable.

What you don’t

Any way to take the licence back. It is perpetual, irrevocable, assignable, and sublicensable through multiple tiers, and it covers both what you upload and what the service makes from it. It reaches your likeness and your voice. You also waive your moral rights — irrevocably, in the same paragraph. You cannot use your own Output to train any AI model, or to build anything that competes with Suno; the training runs one way only. On the free or Basic tier you cannot use the music commercially. Turn on remixing and every remix is jointly owned with a stranger and non-commercial for both of you, paid tier or not.

What they can do with it

Use it, copy it, store it, modify it, distribute it, cut derivative works from it, perform it, display it — and monetize it, market with it, and train their AI models on it. They can hand it to other users of the service and to their own successors and assigns. Output can also sit in a third-party app like Discord where other users may view, download, and modify it; keeping it private is a setting you have to go and change. None of it is paid for: the terms say your use of the service is itself the compensation.

The clauses

The grant — what you put in and what it makes

Suno Terms of Service — Intellectual Property Rights, Content ↗

You represent and warrant that you own all right, title and interest in and to Submissions, including all copyrights and rights of publicity contained therein, and that you possess all necessary rights or have obtained all consents necessary to grant Suno the rights and licenses herein. By using the Service or otherwise transmitting Submissions to us, you grant to Suno and our affiliates, successors, assigns, and designees a worldwide, non-exclusive, fully paid-up, sublicensable (directly and indirectly through multiple tiers), assignable, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable right and license to use, reproduce, store, modify, distribute, create derivative works based on, perform, display, communicate, transmit and otherwise make available any and all Content (in whole or in part) and any rights you may have in your Voice Model, in each case, in any media now known or hereafter developed, in connection with the provision, use, monetization, promotion, marketing, and improvement of our products and services, including the Service and the artificial intelligence and machine learning models related to the Service. This license to your Content and Voice Model includes a license to your likeness, voice rights and other indicia of your persona that may be embodied in your Content or Voice Model.

You warrant you own it

The paragraph opens by making you promise you hold every right in what you upload, “including all copyrights and rights of publicity contained therein”. That warranty is the only place the document tells you what you own in your Submissions — and the liability for getting it wrong is yours.

“Content” is both

The terms define Content as your Submissions and the Output together. This licence is not just over the audio you upload — it is over the songs the service generates for you.

Perpetual and irrevocable

No end date and no way to withdraw it. Cancelling the subscription or deleting the account ends your access, not their licence.

Monetization, in the sentence

The word is in the list of permitted purposes. Suno can make money from your Content and owes you nothing for it.

Training

The training clause is “improvement of our products and services, including … the artificial intelligence and machine learning models related to the Service.” Your uploads and your generations feed the model.

Your voice and face

The last sentence extends the same licence to your likeness, voice rights, and “indicia of your persona”. If you built a Voice Model from recordings of yourself, this is the clause that covers it.

The half that runs the other way — what Suno gives you

Suno Terms of Service — Intellectual Property Rights, Content (paid tiers) ↗

Subject to your compliance with these Terms of Service, if you are a user who has subscribed to the Pro or Premier paid tier of the Service, Suno hereby assigns to you all of its right, title and interest in and to any Output owned by Suno and generated from Submissions made by you through the Service during the term of your paid-tier subscription. However, due to the nature of machine learning, Suno makes no representation or warranty to you that any copyright will vest in any Output.

This one is a grant to you

Every other clause here starts “you grant.” This one is Suno assigning something to you. It is the only place in the document where anything moves in your direction.

What it actually assigns

Read strictly, the clause hands you “any Output owned by Suno” — that is, whatever Suno turns out to own, if anything. Nowhere else does the document say Suno owns the Output, and no clause says you do either. The qualifier is the whole of the evidence.

Paid tiers only

Pro or Premier. The free and Basic tiers get no assignment — see the next clause for what they get instead.

Conditional

It opens “Subject to your compliance with these Terms of Service”. The ownership you paid for is written as conditional on your conduct, and Suno judges that conduct at its own discretion.

Bounded by the subscription

The assignment reaches Output generated during the term of your paid subscription. Anything you make after you stop paying falls back under the free-tier rule below.

The disclaimer at the end

Suno assigns you its interest and then says it cannot promise any copyright exists to assign. You are buying whatever turns out to be there.

Free tier: personal use only

Suno Terms of Service — Intellectual Property Rights, Content (free and Basic tiers) ↗

If you are a user of the free or Basic tier of the Service then, you covenant and agree that you will only use Outputs generated from Submissions made by you through the Service solely for your lawful, internal, personal and non-commercial purposes, provided that you give attribution credit to Suno in each case.

Non-commercial

Music made on the free or Basic tier cannot be sold, licensed, or put behind anything that earns. The whole permitted range is “internal, personal and non-commercial purposes”.

Credit required

Even that personal use is conditioned on crediting Suno each time.

The general bar

A separate Commercial Use section says you agree not to “use or exploit any portion of the Service, and any Output or Voice Model, for any commercial purposes” except as the Content section allows. The paid-tier assignment is that exception.

Remixes are co-owned, and locked to non-commercial

Suno Terms of Service — Intellectual Property Rights, Content (Remixes) ↗

If you are a user that activates features that permit other users of the Service ("Remixers") to remix your Outputs (each, a "Remix"), then you agree that all Remixes shall be a joint work owned jointly and equally by you and the Remixer to the extent that copyright vests in any such Remix. Furthermore, if you are a joint owner of a Remix generated by these Service features, and regardless of whether you are a free Service tier user or a subscriber to a paid Service tier, you additionally covenant and agree that the Remix may only be used for lawful, internal, personal and non-commercial purposes, provided that you give attribution credit to Suno in each case.

A stranger becomes a co-owner

Switch remixing on and anyone who remixes your track owns the result jointly and equally with you.

Paying does not help

The non-commercial restriction on remixes applies to Pro and Premier subscribers too. This is the one place where the subscription buys you nothing.

Public by default — privacy is the setting you have to find

Suno Terms of Service — Intellectual Property Rights, Content ↗

For the avoidance of doubt, Output may be publicly available in a third party application such as Discord, where it may be viewable, downloadable, and modified by other users of that third party application. If the Output becomes publicly available in such third-party application, you agree that other users have a right to access, display, view, store, modify, and copy such Output; provided, however, that you may change your settings to bypass these public sharing default settings so that Output generated will remain private. … Output that is requested by and generated for other users is not your Content.

The opt-out runs backwards

The document calls them “public sharing default settings”. Output is shared unless you go and change something. Keeping your own music private is the action you have to take, not the state you start in.

Other users get rights in it

Once Output is public in a third-party app, the terms give other users “a right to access, display, view, store, modify, and copy such Output”. The clause says nothing about what happens to that right if you switch the setting afterwards.

Someone else’s identical song

“Output that is requested by and generated for other users is not your Content.” The same paragraph says Output “may not be unique across users” — a track indistinguishable from yours can be generated for a stranger, and it is theirs, not yours.

Nothing is paid for, and you waive your moral rights

Suno Terms of Service — Intellectual Property Rights, Content ↗

Such additional uses by Suno and other users of the Service is made without compensation to you or any other provider of the Submissions with respect to the Content or your Voice Model, as the use of the Service by you is hereby agreed as being sufficient compensation for the Content, your Voice Model and grant of rights herein. Furthermore, and for the avoidance of doubt, you irrevocably waive any and all so-called "moral rights" or "droit moral" that may exist in or in connection with the Content or your Voice Model.

Access is the payment

The terms pre-answer the question of compensation: being allowed to use Suno is agreed, in advance, to be full payment for everything you granted.

Moral rights

These are the rights to be credited as the author and to object to your work being distorted. Waiving them irrevocably means you cannot object later to how your Content or your Voice Model is altered or used.

They can train on yours. You cannot train on anything.

Suno Terms of Service — Access and Use of the Service, User Conduct ↗

In no event will you use the Output or your Voice Model to compete with Suno, including to create a competing product or service. … You agree to not use the Service to: … use the Services (and any Output or Voice Model) to create, develop or improve any competing products or services or to power, enable or train other artificial intelligence and machine learning models, tools or technologies;

The asymmetry

The grant clause lets Suno train its models on your Content. This clause bars you from training any model on your Output. The same material moves in one direction only.

Not just rival music tools

The bar is not limited to competitors. It reaches any use of the Services “to power, enable or train other artificial intelligence and machine learning models, tools or technologies” — any model at all, competing or not.

It attaches to the Output

The restriction runs on the Output and the Voice Model, not on your account tier. The clause names no exception for Pro or Premier subscribers.

They can end the account and delete the catalogue

Suno Terms of Service — Termination ↗

You agree that Suno, in its sole discretion, may suspend or terminate your account (or any part thereof) or use of the Service and remove and discard any content (including your Content or Voice Model) within the Service, for any reason in Suno's sole discretion, including for lack of use or if Suno believes that you have violated or acted inconsistently with the letter or spirit of these Terms of Service.

Sole discretion

No breach is required and no notice is promised. Having “acted inconsistently with the letter or spirit” of the terms is enough, and Suno decides what the spirit is.

The songs go with it

Removal covers your Content and your Voice Model. Whatever ownership the paid tier assigned you does not keep the files on the platform — keep your own copies.

Inactivity counts

A separate clause: “You acknowledge that Suno reserves the right to terminate accounts (and all of their corresponding Submissions and Output) that are inactive for an extended period of time.” Not using the service is itself a ground for deletion.
