You’re creating on Canva, which means…

Canva never owns your designs. Share one, and the licence you handed over stops having an end date.

What they own

Nothing, with one limiter worth reading. The binding sentence is “As between you and Canva, you own all right, title and interest in and to your User Content” — it settles ownership between the two of you and speaks to nobody else. Canva’s plain-English box puts it shorter, “We never obtain any ownership over your content,” but the terms say the boxes are “provided for convenience only” and do not affect how the Terms are read. Here the operative text and the box agree, so the box costs you nothing.

What you own

Everything you upload — unless you uploaded it inside a Team, where an Owner or Administrator “may control access to, delete, or re-assign ownership to” it. Canva itself still takes nothing, and Section 4(c) says so again for finished work: “While you retain ownership of your User Content”. What the terms never say is whether the licence you hand back is exclusive. The string “exclusive” occurs in this document exactly once, and only inside “non-exclusive” — qualifying the licence Canva grants you, not the one you grant Canva. What you own less cleanly is a Design built on Canva’s own stock: those pieces sit under a separate Content License Agreement, and the restrictions “vary depending on the type and source of the Licensed Content.” You find out which apply by hovering over the item and clicking an info icon.

What you don't

An end date, once you share. The word “perpetual” appears exactly once in these terms, and sharing a Design is what switches it on. Termination doesn’t reach it: the same subsection that strips your access adds that “User Content included in any shared Design will continue to available within that Design even after the expiration of Your Subscription” — the missing word is Canva’s. You also don’t keep your ideas. Feedback you send Canva is assigned to Canva, not licensed to it.

What they can do with it

Display it, host it, copy it, store it and use it — free, and hand those rights to someone else, because both licences are sublicensable. Canva and “its trusted partners” may also use your content to develop and improve AI-powered features; that one runs off your Privacy Settings and you can change them. Canva Education content is carved out of AI training entirely.

The clauses

The grant, and the second grant

Canva Terms of Use — Section 4(a), User Content, with its explanatory box, and Section 16(i), Headings and Explanations. Effective 20 July 2026. ↗

As between you and Canva, you own all right, title and interest in and to your User Content. You grant Canva a royalty-free and sublicensable license to display, host, copy, store and use your User Content to provide the Service to you, including to keep the Service safe and secure, and to enforce our Acceptable Use Policy (opens in a new tab or window) and these terms. These protections apply at all times to protect our community and are an essential part of providing the Service. To the extent you include User Content in a Design that you’ve shared with others, you grant Canva a perpetual, royalty-free, sublicensable, license to display, host, copy, store and use your User Content to the extent necessary to continue to make that Design available.

…

We never obtain any ownership over your content, but we do need you to give us certain rights to store it and have it ready for you to use in your designs.

…

Headings used in these Terms and the explanatory boxes are provided for convenience only and will not in any way affect the meaning or interpretation of the Terms or any part of them.

“As between you and Canva”

The ownership sentence is not free-standing. It fixes ownership as between the two parties to this contract and settles nothing against anyone else. Against Canva, though, it is flat: you own it.

Two licences, one paragraph

The first covers running the product for you. The second has the same five verbs and no expiry. They sit three sentences apart and most people read them as one.

What flips the switch

Sharing. Including your content in a Design “you’ve shared with others” is the antecedent condition of the second grant — the first sentence carries no perpetual term and the second does. Section 4(d) is headed “Sharing and Publishing Your Designs” and treats the two together; nothing here says a published Design escapes it.

The counts, run

“Perpetual” appears one time in this entire document, and this is it. Neither “irrevocable” nor “worldwide” appears at all — zero occurrences each. Both licences are sublicensable, and neither sentence says who Canva may sublicense to. There is no matching cancel: nothing in these terms lets you withdraw the licence on a Design already shared.

The box is not the contract

Canva’s reassuring line about ownership sits in a grey explanatory box, and Section 16(i) says those boxes “will not in any way affect the meaning or interpretation of the Terms or any part of them.” Read the paragraph above the box, always. On this point the two happen to match — but the box is decoration, not a promise.

The part of a Design you never owned

Canva Terms of Use — Section 4(b), Licensed Content, and Section 4(c), Designs. ↗

You may use Licensed Content in connection with the Service. The use of Licensed Content is subject to additional license rights and restrictions set out in the Content License Agreement (opens in a new tab or window) . The applicable license rights and restrictions vary depending on the type and source of the Licensed Content. You can determine which Content License Terms apply by hovering over the item of Licensed Content and clicking on the info icon.

…

Your Designs may include a combination of User Content and Licensed Content. While you retain ownership of your User Content, any use of Designs containing Licensed Content are subject to the applicable terms of the Content License Agreement …

Your work, their pieces

A finished Design is normally your uploads plus Canva’s stock. Section 4(c) confirms you keep the first half. The second half never became yours, and using the Design means using it.

The rules are somewhere else

The restrictions live in a separate Content License Agreement, outside these Terms — a second document you are bound by without opening it.

Hover to find out

The terms do not state which restrictions apply. They tell you to hover over an item and click an info icon, because the rights “vary depending on the type and source of the Licensed Content.” The contract you are under is per-asset and only discoverable inside the editor.

What deleting the account does not undo

Canva Terms of Use — Section 15(b), Violations, 15(c), Effect of Termination, and 15(d), Survival of Terms. ↗

terminate and delete your account along with all Designs and User Content associated with that account (iv) permanently ban you from using the Service;

…

Upon termination, you must cease using the Service. You will lose access to your Designs, User Content, and any other information uploaded to the Service (and we may delete all such data unless legally prohibited) after termination. User Content included in any shared Design will continue to available within that Design even after the expiration of Your Subscription.

…

Sections titled “Term and Termination,” “Billing,” “Canva’s Intellectual Property,” “Limitation of Liability,” “Indemnification,”and “Miscellaneous” inclusive, will survive any expiration or termination of these Terms.

It cuts one way

Termination ends your access and lets Canva delete your data. It does not touch the second grant in Section 4(a), which carries the word “perpetual” on its own face and needs nothing else to outlive the account.

The survival list, and what is missing from it

Section 15(d) names six surviving sections — Term and Termination, Billing, Canva’s Intellectual Property, Limitation of Liability, Indemnification, Miscellaneous. “Content and Designs” is not among them. That is the strongest argument against the reading above, and it does not carry: a perpetual licence does not need a survival clause, it is perpetual by its own terms. Note too that the sentence about shared Designs speaks of “the expiration of Your Subscription”, which is narrower than account termination.

Export first, or not at all

You can download your work before expiry — unless the account was terminated for a Violation, in which case that window closes with it, along with your right to open a new account without written permission.

The sentence is broken

The clause reads “will continue to available”. That is how it appears in the contract. Quoted as-is, because the clause it garbles is the one that outlives your subscription.

Your ideas, assigned rather than licensed

Canva Terms of Use — Section 10, Canva's Intellectual Property. ↗

You assign to Canva any suggestions, ideas, enhancement requests, or other feedback you provide to Canva relating to the Service or Canva’s products. Canva owns all content, data, software, inventions, ideas and other technology and intellectual property that it develops in connection with the Service and its products.

Assign is not license

A licence lends. An assignment transfers. The two grants in Section 4(a) are licences; this one is not — it moves ownership of the idea to Canva outright.

It has no boundary

The clause reaches “any suggestions, ideas, enhancement requests, or other feedback” relating to the Service. A support ticket, a feature request, a reply to a survey — the clause does not distinguish between them.

And it survives

Section 15(d) lists “Canva’s Intellectual Property” among the sections that survive expiry or termination of the Terms. Leaving does not return it.

The licence running the other way

Canva Terms of Use — Section 2(b), Access to the Service. ↗

Subject to your compliance with these Terms, you're granted a non-exclusive, limited, non-transferable, freely revocable license to access and use the Service for business or personal use. Canva reserves all rights not expressly granted under these Terms.

Read who is granting

This is Canva granting you a right to use the software. It is not a description of what happens to your work, and it looks almost identical to the sentence that is.

The word, and its negation

The string “exclusive” occurs once in this document, and only inside “non-exclusive” — here, in the licence Canva grants you. Standing alone it never appears. Nothing in these terms says whether the licence you grant Canva is exclusive or not.

Freely revocable — theirs

“Revocable” appears once in this contract, and it is this licence: the one Canva can pull. Your access can be withdrawn freely. The perpetual licence you gave in Section 4(a) has no equivalent.

Non-transferable — also theirs

Your right to use Canva cannot be passed on. The licence you gave Canva is sublicensable. The asymmetry turns on a single word, in two sentences a section and a half apart — Section 2(b) and Section 4(a).

AI features, and the setting that governs them

Canva Terms of Use — Section 4(a), User Content. ↗

Your Privacy Settings (opens in a new tab or window) allow you to control whether your general usage data and/or User Content can improve AI-powered features. Canva and its trusted partners may use this to develop and improve AI-powered features if this is consistent with your Privacy Settings (opens in a new tab or window) , which you can review and update at any time. We will not use User Content of Canva Education for AI training.

A setting, not a promise

Whether your content trains AI features is governed by your Privacy Settings, which you can review and change. The contract does not say what the default is.

The trusted partners

The clause extends beyond Canva to its “trusted partners”, who are not named. There is no list here, and no obligation in this document to publish one.

One firm exclusion

Canva Education content is out of AI training with no setting attached — the only unconditional carve-out in the paragraph.

Who else can control your work

Canva Terms of Use — Section 1(b), Signing up with a managed email address, and Section 8, Teams Administration. ↗

If your Administered Account is controlled by an Admin Entity, the Admin Entity’s admin may be able to access, transfer and control your Administered Account and all content and designs associated with it, as well as: make changes to the Administered Account settings, such as billing settings and privacy preferences; make changes to the folder permissions; and delete the Administered Account.

…

If you're on a Team, the Team Owner or Administrator may control access to, delete, or re-assign ownership to the User Content you upload and Designs you create on the account you access as part of the Team. Canva is not responsible for any actions taken by Team Owners or Administrators. It is your responsibility to not upload User Content or create Designs on an account associated with a Team if you do not want to potentially transfer ownership or disclose such User Content or Designs to others on the Team.

The email address decides

Sign up with a work address and your employer can ask Canva for the account. Canva will make reasonable efforts to warn you first so you can move your files to a personal account — reasonable efforts, and a valid email on file.

Re-assign ownership

On a Team, an administrator can hand your Designs to someone else. This is the carve-out on the everything-you-upload line above: the taker is not Canva, it is whoever administers the account. Canva says plainly it is “not responsible for any actions taken by Team Owners or Administrators.”

You bind your employer

The reverse also holds: signing up on a managed address means “your use of the Service will bind your employer or the organization to these Terms”, and “you” in the contract then means both of you.
